AMI Montessori 0-3 Orientation Course
We offered two AMI 0-3 Orientation Courses in Egypt with Teanny Hurtado, In-Person in January 2020 and Fully Online in March 2021.
We were thrilled to have Chacha Vidales delivering some of our second AMI 0-3 Orientation Course lectures.

Course Description
The AMI 0-3 Orientation Course is a theoretical introduction to the developmental characteristics and needs of children ages 0-3. It supports understanding of this developmental stage for parents, caregivers, school staff, or any individuals seeking general knowledge about Montessori developmental theory and education. Successful participation in all Orientation Course Requirements leads to the award of the AMI Orientation Course “Certificate of Completion” at the 0-3 level.
Course Components
- General Introduction to Montessori Theory and Education, including Human Tendencies and the Four Planes of Development, with special reference to the needs and characteristics of children at different stages within the ages 0-3
- The role of an adult as a collaborator in a0–3-year-old child’s self-construction
- The role of an environment in providing necessary conditions to support a 0–3-year-old child’s self-construction: the Home; the Montessori Nido; the Montessori Infant Community
- The importance of Observation: purpose, technique, and self-reflection, as appropriate for ages 0-3
- Self-Construction: Ages 0-3
– The Absorbent Mind–the “Unconscious Creator”, with reference to the Sensitive Periods– The Importance of Order and Routine, with Emphasis on the Role of Order in the Development of the Personality
– The Development of Movement including the stages in Control and Coordination of Movement ages 0-3
– The Development of Language; including the use of Language in general, how to listen to children, and how to elicit language
– The Significance of Food, Clothing, and Toileting during the ages 0-3
– The Development of Independence, including Functional Independence and the Foundations for Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual Independence as conditions for Human Interdependence (First Plane of Development: 0-6)
– The Montessori concepts of Freedom and Limits
– Foundations for the Development of spontaneous Self-Discipline
Required readings
It is recommended that selected readings from the four books listed below be undertaken during the course to prepare students for further reading after the course.
- Understanding the Human Being
- The Child in the Family
- Education for a New World
- Citizen of the World (for an overview of Montessori developmental theory and education)
Additional readings at the discretion of the Trainer. Selected passages may be translated for use on the Course, at the discretion of the Trainer.
Certificate
The international AMI 0-3 Orientation certificate of Completion is awarded to students who have satisfied the 90% attendance requirements and have completed coursework to the required standard. Digital Certificates will be emailed to you by AMI after successfully completing the course (There are no hard certificates).
The objective of the international AMI 0-3 Orientation Course is to help the student:
- Gain general knowledge of the Montessori approach to childhood development and education.
- Explore how an adult can best support optimal development for this age group in any environment
- Understand the unique nature of the 0–3-year-old child’s mind (the Absorbent Mind), the powers for development that are active at this stage, and the needs and characteristics of children at this stage of development,
- Understand the general importance of Observation as a basis for providing developmental support of 0–3-year-old children in any environment.
